Review and Haiku: Superman (2025)

Welcome to Disembodied Screams, spoilers, possibly, maybe, proceed with caution. You’ve been warned. Quick reminder, this episode is available in Video form on Spotify or YouTube or you can listen to it on Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, or Spotify. With all that said, let’s get started – 

Horror that lives in your soul? What? No, this isn’t a horror movie, far from it, probably not even horror adjacent, but there are some creepy moments. When Superman is covered in those nano boats and he’s encased in that mummy-like substance or when he vomits up those nano bots – a very end of a possession movie moment. The girl chasing him throughout the movie The Engineer played by María Gabriela de Faría – she had some horrific moments. Transforming into many things and a few were kind of terrifying. I even wondered if my daughter was okay during one of those transformations. The Engineer even turns her arms into tentacles – creepy stuff and there’s that other dimension with that straight out of a horror movie alien ferryman moving that floating barge past those glass prison cells. And if you want to truly keep it in the horror family and truly justify this movie on this Channel – James Gunn wrote and directed Superman. Ever heard of him? He gave us some great Guardians of the Galaxy movies that have some horror moments splattered throughout them, probably more than Superman, he wrote and directed Slither, which I would love to cover at some point in time on the Channel, and he wrote, possibly and some consider it, the best remake of the remake era – Dawn of the Dead. He’s no stranger to the horror genre even if he’s playing around with Superheroes now. I think all of that justifies this movie being on the channel, and I like to cover comic book stuff too, mostly with a horror lean.

Moving all of that aside, beyond that thin justification, the absolute main reason why I wanted to cover Superman is because I enjoyed this movie. Reminded me of the OG Superman when I was just a youngster. It’s a movie that makes you smile and I am down for that. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of gut wrenching moments, but overall this is a feel good movie with a feel good ending. You walk away feeling a bit better after watching it. 

Cast wise, this is probably the most ruthless Lex Luthor I’ve seen on screen. He was purely and simply evil – thank you dr. loomis. I liked the way Nicholas Hoult portrayed him. No goofy criminal stuff – just stoic and focused on his goal. Nicholas was very believable. Made you hate Lex, a lot, and root for his eventual end demise. Maybe the best Lex we’ve gotten so far. Louis Lane played by Rachel Brosnahan was great in her role. Skyler Gisondo, played Jimmy Olsen, he was good too, captured the character nicely, and David Corenswet who played Superman. Kudos to him for embodying this iconic superhero through and through. Spot on casting. Very OG 1978 Superman right down to the suit, which looked amazing. David did a great job stepping into the role of Clark Kent and Superman, which I know isn’t easy. Christopher Reeve laid a big shadow over this character and he is still the one I think of when I think of Superman, but David held his own and brought his own style to this iconic superhero. 

Krypto the dog, loved him too. Added a bit of humor in the darkest of times. Hawk Girl played by Isabela Merced, that screech is worthy of some horror movie moments. Mr Terrific played by Edi Gathegi did a great job as well, and one of my favorites, Nathan Fillion as The Green Lantern, he always adds so much life to even the smallest of roles. Awesome as the Green Lantern. His haircut was nothing short of a nightmare.  

Beyond that, story, script, directing, top notch. James Gunn did an amazing job behind the lens. Great action, effects, and fight scenes – I felt those punches. And speaking of sound, let’s go with one of my absolute favorite parts of this entire movie – the score. Chef’s kiss. It fit this movie like a glove and I loved hearing the sprinkles of the OG 1978 Superman throughout the film set to an electric guitar. Bravo to the music department for making such a great score and it’s funny too. James Gunn kind of funny. Had me laughing in good times and bad. Now, the haiku.

One more thing or a few more things – loved the end when Superman blasted up into the air and spun in a circle with that heat vision blasting all those robots to pieces. Cool stuff and there’s even a gigantic Kaju and a floating tentacled eyeball that had me laughing. I’ll stop there because I could keep rambling.
